Natural Remedies For Depression

Depression has become a prevalent but hidden malady in American society, affecting millions of people. For some reason, depression is the stepchild of maladies, that no one wants to admit to experiencing, and family members often want to dismiss. Depression, as a general malaise, may be difficult to diagnose or define. Symptoms of depression include sadness, melancholy feelings, anxiety, helpless and hopeless emotions, insomnia, fatigue, frequent headaches, loss of appetite, constipation and difficulty breathing. Depression is often accompanied by symptoms of anxiety disorder, leaving the patient in a nightmare of psychological disorder.

There are many mood elevators and other pharmaceutical medications designed to help, but these powerful medications can be dangerous, with serious side effects, including thoughts of suicide. If you suffer from depression, you may do well to investigate some natural remedies for depression.

You need not consider yourself defective or “wacko”. Depression is very real and debilitating to those who suffer its effects. There is even a form of depression linked to the seasons, called Seasonal Affective Depression (SAD) where depression is triggered by shortened daylight hours. Whatever the cause of your depression, take heart! There are a number of natural remedies for depression. Let's take a look at some especially effective natural remedies for depression.

Naturopathic doctors and herbalists agree that combinations of several herbs are most effective as natural remedies for depression. The individual herbs employed in such a mixture are designed to minimize side effects while taking the individual's specific condition into consideration.

For mild depression, try a combination of sage, chamomile, cloves and ginseng. Peppermint may be substituted for chamomile. As a general, ongoing remedy, tinctures of the following herbs are helpful: St. John's wort (2 parts) and oat, lavender and mugwort (1 part each), taken in 5 ml dosages three times daily over a period of a month or more will bring relief.

Another of the natural remedies for depression also addresses symptoms of anxiety, doing double duty for those who suffer from symptoms of depression. A tea made of rosemary and sage, taken on a daily basis can work wonders. Use a teaspoon each of rosemary and sage, steeped in a cup of boiling water for ten minutes and then strained as a daily tonic.

Licorice root is one of the most powerful natural remedies for depression, with several MAO inhibitors, rivaling the strongest pharmaceutical medications in effectiveness, without the worry of suicidal tendencies. However, licorice root must be used with care and moderation. A licorice root tea may be safely consumed at three cups per day. Immoderate or long term use may produce counter-productive results, such as headaches, fatigue, high blood pressure, water retention and potassium deficiencies.

Check with your doctor before starting any natural remedies for depression regime, to be sure there are no unsafe interactions or contraindications particular to your conditions.
